One of the key directions of Russian education in recent years has been the development and improvement of the environment to identify and support talented and gifted children. Major changes in the educational system are underway.

The problem of gifted children arises due to the fact that there is often no continuity among educational institutions in this line of work. Research in this area shows that in the study of giftedness it is necessary to use the system-activity approach, taking into account the environmental factors that have a direct impact on the development of intellectual and creative potential of children and youth.

The main research areas of the laboratory are:

• improving professional competence of the teaching staff of institutions of secondary education in the field of gifted students' development;
• research, compilation and dissemination of innovative experience in the development of gifted children;
• psycho-pedagogical support of teachers' professional activity in the development of giftedness;
• training University students to develop schoolchildren's intellectual and creative potential.

Our main objectives are:

• study the needs of teachers, educators and parents in the development of gifted students;
  
• accumulation, systematization, research and selection of the scientific and methodical material for work with gifted children;
• development of scientific and methodical bases of gifted students' development and providing teachers of secondary educational institutions and teachers of additional education with methodological assistance in the field;
• encourage talented students.

In 2013, the laboratory won a grant from the Academy of Sciences for the study entitled "a system of psychological diagnostics of technical giftedness of children and youth”.
