The Department of economic and mathematical modeling was established in 2014 through the merger of the Department of Mathematics and Economic Cybernetics and the Department of Statistics and Econometrics.

Department of Mathematics and Economic Cybernetics was established in 1932 and was named the Department of Physics and Mathematics, and then was renamed the Department of Mathematics. The first head was prof. N.P. Ponomarev. Since the beginning of the Great Patriotic War the Department of Mathematics and the Department of Statistics merged. Associate Professor V.M. Yermolaev was headed and directed the Department of Higher Mathematics and Statistics until 1956. From 1956 to 1966 the department was headed by Assoc. Prof. N.N. Nikulin and from 1966 to 1977 - by Assoc. Prof. M.B. Faizullin.

In 1978 the Department was separated into the Department of Higher Mathematics and the Department of Statistics. The department of Higher Mathematics was headed by Prof. V.D. Chugunov who ran it until 1989. Since 1989 the Department was headed by Prof. R.S. Mardanov.

The Department of Higher Mathematics was merged with the Department of Computer Science, it was renamed as the Department of Mathematics and Economic Informatics and was led by Prof. R.S. Mardanov.

In 1991 the Department of Forecasting and Statistics was formed, the head of which was Assoc. Prof. I.A. Biktagirov. Since 2004 the Department was known as the Department of Statistics and Econometrics. Since September 2004, Head of the Department of Statistics and Econometrics was Assoc. Prof. R.M. Kundakchyan, from December 2009 - Prof. I.I. Ismagilov.

In May 2010, the Department of Statistics and Econometrics was merged with the Department of Natural Sciences (formerly the Department of Technology). The new Department of Statistics, Econometrics and Science was headed by Prof. I.I. Ismagilov.
